FAQ

How much does it cost?
Our program is very individualized.  Once we learn more about your child, we will be better able to recommend the appropriate number of hours.  Our rates will normally range in the $40’s to $50’s per hour depending on the specific program and number of hours recommended.  We have several payment options available and have a commitment to never turning a family away because of cost.  We will work with you to find a way to make our program affordable.

What do you do?
We teach kids how to learn, making school easier for them.  We meet with students, parents and teachers to provide a holistic approach that will meet your needs.  Using dynamic and interactive assessment methods, we are able to find out what is going on for your student.

How long / often do students need to attend?
After the interactive assessment, we will make a suggestion as to the number of hours that will benefit your student.  We then recommend that your student attend at least two hours per week, sometimes a bit more if needed; consistency in attendance is the key to success.

My child only needs help in one subject?
It’s great to hear that your child is doing so well in his other subjects.  However, we often still like to begin with an assessment to find out what’s causing his difficulty in that subject.  How long has he struggled in this subject?  How are his organizational skills?  How are his note-taking skills?  Are there underlying issues that might translate to problems with additional subjects as things become more challenging later in High School, College, or beyond?  Together with you, we can make an informed decision on whether to focus on a particular subject or broaden the scope.  We want to be sure we are looking at the root causes of his problems and meeting all the academic needs of your student.

My child has ADHD/ADD, CAP, PDD, autism, or another learning issue.
Many students benefit from our active learning strategies.  Our teachers help students learn to recognize when they are off task – a key skill in helping them understand how their minds work and helping them to find ways to compensate for weaknesses.  With your permission, we will meet with classroom teachers.  We want to help our students transfer all of our strategies to the classroom setting.  Working on time management skills, teaching students to think about their learning, and working with school teachers help build a strong foundation.  As always, you are welcome to come in and visit, meet with our educational director, and take a tour of the center.

My child is already advanced in school and needs to be challenged.  Can you help him?
Absolutely!  When we learn more specific details about your child, we can prepare an enrichment program to help him study even more efficiently and apply our strategies to give him the challenge he needs.  The assessment is a great tool for us to learn more about your student.  We would love to hear more of your expectations for him, and we will work on the subject areas you wish to be challenged further.

What is the background of your teachers?
We employ only experienced professionals.  All of our teachers have strong teaching experience.  They are well trained and most have formal teaching degrees.  We do utilize some specialized professionals for higher level math and sciences whom we qualify and ensure meet our teaching standards.

When can I get my child assessed and what are the benefits?
We offer some Saturday assessments by appointment and will also offer some after school assessments for middle and high school students.  However, the assessment process is important and is worth prioritizing in your schedule.  Once completed, you will receive a wealth of information about your child, including a detailed individualized report with our suggestions for best meeting the needs of your student.

Do I need to do the test?  We’ve done a lot of testing already.
By all means, bring in the testing your child has already completed and we’ll be happy to see if those give similar information to our assessment.  We can sometimes utilize portions of other tests.  Sometimes, we recommend completing our assessment as it is a valuable tool for discovering how your child learns.

Can you test two kids?
We’d be happy to test two or more of your children.  In order to get an individualized plan, however, it is important that we test one at a time.  We can often accommodate siblings on the same day, offering back-to-back appointments.  Discounts are given for sibling programs.

Can you tell me more about your ACT/SAT program?
Our high quality teachers work with your student to diagnose specific areas of weakness and create an individualized program.  We offer guidance in test-taking strategies, time management, and specific content areas.  Utilizing practice tests, we help your student develop more critical reading skills and give immediate feedback so that she can begin to pay attention to her testing strengths and weaknesses.  We have had great success with every student who has worked with us, seeing increased scores with each one.

How are you different from other tutoring centers?

While there are others with great tutoring programs, our focus is to teach your student how to learn on his own.  Other programs often don’t provide as individualized a program as we do, and some rely heavily on increased homework.  We can provide homework if that is needed; however, many of our students already have sufficient homework from school.  Our students will not need our support forever.  It is our goal to help students learn how to learn and get them to a point where they can practice our strategies on their own.  We teach them how to study, spending a large portion of every class helping them to pay attention to how their minds work and getting them to verbalize how this will help them be better students at school.

Can I get some references from current parents?
Yes, we would be happy to connect you to a current parent.  With your permission, we can arrange for a parent to call or e-mail you with their success story.

What grade levels do you work with?
We have worked with all grades from pre-K through high school and have even spent some time helping college students.

How do you teach my child to learn?
Our teachers are great at getting to know your child.  We like to say that we are playful with a purpose.  We spend time during each class helping her to see what her mind is doing as she works.  We also give ample time for reflecting on all new skills learned, helping her to make the connection to her school work.  For example, by discussing her answers to “Drawing Conclusions” exercises, we can get a better picture of how she’s processing information and help her to develop critical thinking skills that will benefit her for life.

Can I come in and observe a class?
Sure.  While we do not normally allow parents to regularly sit in on classes (it is distracting to the kids and interrupts the natural flow of the class), we would be happy to schedule a time for you to come in and observe.  We will ask that you sit at a neighboring table so as to minimize the distraction.

What if my spouse has questions?
We would be happy to meet with you both in person.  We can make an appointment for you to come in and talk more.  That way you could see the center, meet our team, and get a better feel for how we operate.

If you have any questions not addressed here or would like additional information, please do not hesitate to give us a call.  Thanks so much for your interest in St. Louis Learning.
